While it is widespread knowledge that the information technology market brings great opportunities nowadays, the first step is to figure out how to make profit from it. Freelance work is probably the most flexible way to do so. But expertise alone doesn't suffice. It is worthless without knowing where to sell it.
For this reason, social networking platforms have emerged. But these often carry privacy problems. This is not surprising when you look at their business models. Most of the time, they gain profit by offering a big pool of information, and this information obviously comes from the users of that platforms. If you want to make profit from using them, you are a bit on your own.
For that reason, I regard service markets as more useful. These platforms make profit from the provisions they take for the services sold using them, so they are directly interested in making it easy to find paid work opportunities on them. In my experience, they are still very useful in getting to know future business partners.
A platform I have made good use of is GetAFreelancer. They are very focused on international business and provide their own escrow service to prevent problems with international payments. When using the platform as a well-educated person, you will notice that the pressure from low-wage countries is rather high. On the other hand, the service buyers tend to honor good education, so finding interesting projects is very easy. If that sounds interesting, why not give it a shot yourself:

Based on my own experiences on the platform, I compute small a selection of promising projects. I cannot guarantee quality, but they may serve as a starting point for browsing through the open projects:
